Excerpt:
She’s still yelling on the other side and I don’t know what to do. May told me to go to Nanna but I can’t go alone because she says I can never, ever go alone, and she says I have to do what she says. She said go to Nanna’s, but I can’t go without her so maybe she meant for me to wait. I run around and up the hill and I pass Skinny who barks at me and I reach the front porch. There’s bright lights from a car and I wonder who it is that came and then I see that they broke our door and that was probably what caused the loud. I start to get scared, there’s broken wood everywhere, and I don’t hear May anymore and I don’t see anyone inside the house. Then he comes up the basement and he’s big and he’s dirty and he’s wearing one of those puffy dark jackets that swish-swish, like the kind that May has. And May is being dragged up behind him, and I run and hide behind the car because he’s so big and May looks so scared of him. She’s screaming again, screaming ‘no no no’, and swinging with her other arm, but he doesn’t let go. I crouch beside the wheel and then I can’t see anymore but I hear him hit her, and then May’s not screaming anymore. I feel him dump her in the car, and then I hear him walking away.
